PRO, CON AND IN BETWEEN

Disputes about Botox and plastic surgery raged quietly behind the scenes at the Oscar ceremonies Sunday as stars stood their ground pro or con.

The debate plays out in words and in actions. From outspoken Botox opponent Meryl Streep, 60, to plastic surgery fan Melanie Griffith, 52 — plus almost every possible variation in between — the stars put their bodies on the line.

Age doesn’t seem to matter. Among celebrities, both foes and fans of cosmetic medicine are represented in almost every age category.

Below is a sampling of celebrities who were at the Oscar celebrations on Sunday. To see photos of each of them while you read, CLICK HERE for this same commentary in slide show format.

TWENTIES

ENHANCED. Actress Audrina Patridge, 24, has breast implants, the Web site Good Plastic Surgery concluded on the basis of a nude photo of the actress that was distributed online. Her breast implants, “look good because she didn’t go huge on her small frame,” says plastic surgeon Dr. John Di Saia of San Clemente and Huntington Beach.

MIXED SIGNALS. Singer Kelly Osbourne, 25, daughter of plastic surgery fan Sharon Osbourne, said last year that she hates the size of her breasts and planned to have them reduced within the next year, but …

Recently she became upset about reports that she lost weight via liposuction. She says she dropped the pounds by healthy diet and regular exercise.

FEARFUL. Actress Natalie Portman, 28, thinks she may need plastic surgery at age 40 because Hollywood producers shun actresses when wrinkles appear on their faces, she says. She hopes that won’t be the case, but she says she’s not ruling out surgery.

PLASTIC SURGERY FOE. Singer-actress Jennifer Hudson, 28, (pictured at right), says she won’t get plastic surgery.

“I have the height of a model, the breasts that people pay for and the lips that everybody wants, so why should I change? I wouldn’t change myself for anything or anybody. That will never happen,” she says.

RUMORS. Plastic surgeon and blogger Tony Youn says singer/actress Jessica Simpson, 29, has apparently gotten breast implants, a nose job and repeated lip augmentations.

“Jessica Simpson is the frequent subject of rumors about having a breast augmentation, but this rumor is not confirmed,” says Plasticopedia.

THIRTIES

DEBATE. Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, 32, has been the subject of intense speculation about whether she recently had plastic surgery to her neck and around her eyes.

Fueling that speculation were several repeated visits she made to a Beverly Hills medical office building in recent weeks.

Some plastic surgeons say they see signs of subtle surgically created changes in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s nose and eyes.

NOT FOR ME. Actress Kate Winslet, 34, says she rejects Botox because “I want to be able to really show the expressions on my face.”

A LITTLE. Cosmetic doctors believe that actress Penelope Cruz, 35, had a nose job early in her career.

In addition, the appearance of her lips sometimes suggests that she has used injections to augment them.

Nevertheless, Cruz says she’s looking forward to being a wrinkled 80-year-old: “When I’m 80, I want to look in the mirror and see an 80-year-old woman. My grandmothers had so many wrinkles, and every wrinkle told a story. I want to experience every year of my life for what it is,” she says.

REALLY? Model Heidi Klum, 36, says she won’t have plastic surgery, but some cosmetic doctors suspect that she already has breast implants.

ON HOLD. Actress Selma Blair, 37, says she’s not yet ready for Botox or plastic surgery, but she doesn’t reject them.

She says, “I wanted to get Botox once to make me feel younger. But I don’t really have [enough wrinkles] to justify it yet.”

MORE THAN BEFORE. Actress Cameron Diaz, 37, said last year, “I’d love to be more voluptuous. It’s just not my body type.” This year she looked less pencil-thin than in the past, which isn’t a result of plastic surgery.

SECRET BOTOX FAN. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe, 38, tends to keep mum about cosmetic medicine, even though changes can be seen in her face. When she doesn’t use Botox, she has extensive wrinkles on her forehead.

LIPO-ENHANCED. Former child actor Corey Feldman, 38, had liposuction two years ago to flatten his abdomen. He says he’s obsessed with his appearance because of the high standards of Hollywood and the demands his mother placed on him as a child actor.

BOTOX OPPONENT. Comedian Tina Fey, 39, is no fan of Botox, but she’s not averse to laser skin treatments. “I don’t think Botox is for me. I think it is bad,” she says.

She says people who use Botox injections to smooth away wrinkles “look like their faces are full of candles — a shiny, shiny face. Festive. A holiday candle.” She has not had reconstructive plastic surgery to remove the small trademark scar she got in an earlier incident.

FORTIES

STOP! Online celebrity watchers have repeatedly urged actress Molly Ringwald, 42, (pictured at right) to stop using so much Botox and lip-plumping filler.

Readers in a survey on the “In Your Face” blog named her as one the celebrities at the Oscars who had most obviously visited a cosmetic doctor.

RESTORATION. Actor Jeremy Piven, 44, suffered from male-pattern baldness, but he reversed his losses with a hair transplant operation.

NOT ‘NEVER.’ Actress Sarah Jessica Parker, 44, is an outspoken opponent of Botox and plastic surgery, although she says, “I’d be a fool to say ‘Never!’ because who knows how I’ll feel about myself in four years?”

She reportedly had a nose job early in her career, but she shuns Botox. “I haven’t had Botox or collagen or anything. I have lines,” she says.

“Do I have big fake boobs, Botox, collagen and big lips? No. Do I fit the ideals and standards of some white men writing a men’s magazine? Maybe not,” she said when the men’s magazine Maxim labeled her the “Unsexiest Woman Alive.”

EXCESS. Sandra Bullock, 45, who won the Oscar for best actress, sometimes is criticized for what looks like excessive reliance on Botox injections.

Bullock says she doesn’t need plastic surgery. She learned “how to achieve a more voluptuous figure without altering yourself surgically” while working on her “Miss Congeniality” films about beauty pageants, she says. “You can make it work. You can make it bigger or smaller. If you don’t like your hips, go exercise.”

Readers in a survey on the “In Your Face” blog said that, among celebrities at the Oscar ceremony, Sandra Bullock was the second-most obviously reliant on a cosmetic doctor.

AGING NATURALLY. Actress Marisa Tomei, 45, apparently has not turned to plastic surgery.

Last year, the Web site Plastic Celebs said, “Experts and plastic surgeons have examined her photos and found out that there was nothing artificial about her hotness. Marisa’s au naturale and that is really impressive. Even the before and after photos don’t reveal anything suspicious. Job well done, Marisa!”

SHE SAYS NO. Actress Demi Moore, 47, insists she hasn’t had plastic surgery, even though few believe her. Celebrity watchers have even estimated astounding price tags of $400,000 to $3 million for the work she has undergone.

More modestly, dermatologist Dr. Renee Cobos of Fullerton says Moore may have kept herself relatively wrinkle-free by using Botox in her forehead and crow’s feet areas, plus peels or laser resurfacing.

SPOKESWOMAN. Actress Virginia Madsen, 48, is a celebrity endorser of Botox.

PLASTIC SURGERY FAN. Actress / comedian Kathy Griffin, 49, is an on-again, off-again fan of plastic surgery. She suffered serious side effects from liposuction in 1999. At the time, she criticized plastic surgery.

Then she changed course, becoming a born-again fan of plastic surgery in the early 2000s, when she had a nose job, brow lift, Botox injections, dental veneers, chemical hair straightening, a chemical peel and more liposuction. She says she uses Botox “now and then.”

NO, NO … MAYBE. Actress Julianne Moore, 49, is an outspoken opponent of Botox. She also dislikes plastic surgery, which she says it’s like the ancient Chinese practice of foot binding, which left women crippled. But she doesn’t go so far as to rule it out for herself.

FIFTIES

HIGH-DEF HORRORS. Actress / film maker Rosanna Arquette, 50, says high-definition TV puts pressure on actors and actresses who oppose cosmetic interventions such as Botox and plastic surgery. “I was super against [Botox], saying I’ll never do it. Then you see yourself on HD and you want to kill yourself,” she said. Arquette made the documentary “Searching for Debra Winger,” which examined Hollywood pressures to have plastic surgery.

TOO MUCH. Actress Melanie Griffith, 52, has apparently had cheek implants, a facelift and injections or implants to make her lips more plump, according to plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Sundine of Newport Beach.

Readers in a survey on the “In Your Face” blog declared her the celebrity at the Oscar ceremony who had most obviously visited a cosmetic doctor.

SIXTIES

BOTOX OPPONENT. Actress Meryl Streep, 60, speaks out against Botox, saying that it’s an obstacle to good acting.

“[Botox] limits you. If you do that, then you can’t play so many different great parts, and also parts of your face don’t move. For an actor, that’s not the greatest thing. It’s like an interruption in the energy,” she says.

Despite such plain talk, some people believe that she undergoes the knife in secret. The MakeMeHeal.com Web site, for example, suspects she has had “a few facelifts, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), plenty of Botox and injectable fillers.”

NOT FOR ME. Actress Sigourney Weaver, 60, says her acting style is a reason she hasn’t used Botox or had plastic surgery. “Actors’ faces have to move. It’s a personal choice. It depends on what you want. Yes, we probably want to see perfect people, too,” she says.

She says favors natural aging. “I do think life should put lines on your face, or you’re not getting out enough,” she says.

NATURAL PLUS. Actress Suzanne Somers, 63, is a natural foods and vitamins enthusiast, but she reportedly has had a facelift, lip injections, brow lift and eyelid surgery.

REALLY? Helen Mirren, 64, recently said she “would definitely consider cosmetic surgery” if she were “in a different profession.” But so far she hasn’t had any work done, she says.

Despite her wrinkled face, not everyone believes her. Plastic surgeon Dr. John Di Saia of San Clemente and Huntington Beach, for example, says she “has already had quite a bit” of plastic surgery.

HELP VS. AGING. Actress Stefanie Powers, 67, reportedly has had a facelift, browlift and necklift. She likely uses Botox and dermal fillers, cosmetic doctors say.

SEVENTIES

DISPLAYED The work of a plastic surgeon was on display in the face of actress Sally Kellerman, 72.

EIGHTIES

NO, BUT … Actress Lauren Bacall, 85, says the popularity of plastic surgery is a “youth sickness,” but she admits to having an occasional Botox injection.

“I have friends who are beautiful women, and they are having liposuction and boob lifts, and I say ‘What are you doing to yourselves? Stop it!’ I disdain this whole youth sickness thing.”

Why does she sometimes use Botox? “The camera picks up everything, and you don’t want to really look like a hag,” she explains.
